Nanineye had stated the black parts of the canvas were originally going to be unplaceable. This idea was rejected.

This canvas was designed by TwentyTwo.
The size of the canvas was 2008x1860 and 1,609,200 of the 3,734,880 total pixels were placeable. (43.1%) There were also 1,067,360 unplaceable colored pixels which can be seen highlighted in red in the placemap image to the right.
