Template:Warbox

A warbox is not compulsory! Some conflicts do not lend themselves to its use; it is better to omit it than to grossly over-simplify the conflict merely for the benefit of having it.

If present, it should use {{Warbox}}, like this:

{{Warbox
|conflict=
|partof=
|campaign=
|image=
|caption=
|date=
|place=
|result=
|combatant1=
|combatant2=
|commander1=
|commander2=
|strength1=
|strength2=
|casualties1=
|casualties2=
|casus=
|territory=
|}}

Parameter notes:

  • Any parameters can be ommitted if desired; the choice of which parameters are appropriate for a particular conflict is left to the discretion of the article editors.
  • The "partof" parameter should indicate the related war when using the template on a battle article. When used on a war article, it can be used to link the war to a group of wars, when appropriate.
  • The "casus" parameter is used to indicate a formal casus belli; it should not be used for an extended discussion of underlying causes for the war.
  • The "territory" parameter can be used to give a brief description of territory changes; it should likewise not be used for extended descriptions of the peace settlement.

"campaign" parameter

The "campaign" parameter is used to specify a campaign box which allows the reader to navigate through the battles that make up a campaign or war. (If the battlebox describes a stand-alone battle, use {{Battlebox no campaign}} as described below.)

First check to see if someone else has already made a campaign box for that campaign; look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Battles/Campaignboxes and also at other battles in the campaign in case a previous editor forgot to update the list.

The campaign box template should be named Template:Campaignbox XXXX where XXXX is a short name for the campaign (disambiguate with a date if necessary, for example Template:Campaignbox Somme 1916). The "campaign" parameter is then "XXXX" — there is no need to append another "Campaign" to the name of the template! For example:

The campaignbox should use Template:Campaign, like this:

{{Campaign|
name=
|battles=
}}

Notes:

  • The "name" of the campaign should be linked to an article about the campaign, if one exists.
  • "battles" should be an en-dash separated list of battles in the campaign. Abbreviate the names of the battles to keep the box small (for example link to "Battle of YYYY" as [[Battle of YYYY|YYYY]]).
  • Add the campaign box to the list of campaignboxes.
